I have a question for you: If a Mercedes cost half as much or less, would it still be a Mercedes? In other words, if a Mercedes S600 - currently priced around $145K - were suddenly priced the same as a Toyota Corolla XRS - currently priced around $25K - would your perception of the value and quality of a Mercedes fall? Why? Trackback(0)

Two attorneys written by Jim, June 27, 2008
Here's another one most all of us consider:
Two attorneys of equal appearance - one charges $300/hr, the other $100/hr. We assume the $300/hr attorney is the better lawyer. If we're seeking help on a truly important legal matter, we'd prefer the one charging $300/hr. We may qualify both attorneys and conclude the $100/hr one is equally or more capable, but our first thought is the higher priced attorney is more skilled and valuable. report abuse

The price expectation for a premium brand like Gibson or Mercedes is going to be high - if someone sees that the price has dropped they are going to think "well, what's wrong with this new offering by a premium company? It must not be nearly as good as their older offerings if the price is so low" and they don't buy the premium brand.
People associate a high price with quality, and if the price no longer meets expectations then people naturally assume that the quality doesn't meet expectations, either.
